Netflix appreciates HTML 5 in the talk about its device apps!!

Netflix, by opting HTML 5 for building user experience, for its Netflix ready devices, has highlighted the significance and needs of HTML5.
Earlier in October this year, Netflix experience on PS 3 took a leaping rise from requiring an instant streaming disc to operating a standalone app. I was going through Netflix new tech blog and found this blog, where, the VP of Personalization Technology, John Ciancutti, has discussed about how they have used HTML5 for their device.
The new edge for this PS 3 was written in HTML 5 using a custom build of web kit, making the gaming area even more note worthy and relieving.
HTML5 has also played an important role in creating the UX for the iPhone, iPad and forthcoming Android apps. According to Ciancutti, there have been a lot of benefits by building the base of Netflix applications in HTML5.
What are they?
HTML5 helps a lot in the user testing area. First of all, it ensures that finding and watching movies or videos becomes easy which is very crucial. For any company like Netflix, this becomes the central issue for keeping users subscribed to the service or to convince new users to join the service and HTML 5 does complete justice from its part for this end by experimenting with various setups on the front end as well as the back end making the experience more enriched.
– What is the requirement here? The requirement is that the user testing area should be able to roll out updates or roll back changes at the right time. And this is where HTML5 proves itself, according to Ciancutti’s explanation. Let’s see what he has to say.
According, to him, the technology is delivered from Netflix servers every time they wish to launch their application, allowing them to constantly update, test and improve the present experience they are offering. It also ensures that their customers don’t have to go undergo a manual process to install new software for every change that they make. Putting it in their words- it “just happens.”!!
How’s the case different from what it was earlier?
The Netflix experience devices that were built earlier- most of them rely upon embedded software to state the Netflix experience. In that case, changing the interface calls for a system update. And it may not always be possible to make changes in the experience, such was the situation.
But, for apps built in HTML 5, no such issues arise and this allows the team of the company to have better control over the UX, thereby, enhancing their range and chances of testing. This is one help rendered by HTML 5.
Next,
HTML 5 also benefits the UI engineers and backend developers in a way that they can use one code base and avail benefits from it. No doubt that there might be display or backend layer for each platform, but the underlying structure will not change. And now, this helps in speeding the process of undulating improvements across the product line, and therefore, builds a constant product experience.
Well, after reading this blog, I have become pretty much sure that HTML5 is quite distinctive and ahead of its forerunners, and, apart from just being a markup language, it can contribute till much extent in creating apps. It can go till the extent of creating vigorous, influential and powerful web applications when combined with CSS3 and JavaScript.
Anyways, you must use the new Netflix UI on the PS3, for a practical knowledge as to how the companies are effectively using HTML 5!!
